I honestly don't know hun...i'm thinking there is something in our FAQ about it...but it's been a while since i looked at themI see ppl doing it all the time but never gave it much thought....but personally i think it's the same as images...you should have permission.

It can be consider plagiarism, be careful, would only use a very small portion of the lyric, and always credit. Many group managers may delete tags, it's a judgement call.

Ok thank you ... so basically if you only use a small part of the lyrics and put the credit to the song writer and the group managers ok it then it should be ok .. out of interest would you allow it here ?

Just adding a bit of info.
I learned the hard way.

Many songwriters are members of ASCAP. [google it, you'll find lots of info!]
I used to run a Bon Jovi fansite.
I put lyrics to the songs on my site.
Island Records threatened me with a lawsuit if I didn't remove them.
The band are members of ASCAP so their lyrics are protected from being reproduced in any way, shape or form.
Of course I gladly obliged and took them down.

It's better to be safe than sorry. I'm sure they won't go after you because you put lyrics on a signature tag, but I've been cautious ever since.

Just a little info from my side...what I've always done is write to the groups contact email addy (it's usually the manager, etc.) and put the 1-2 lines of text I want to use with the way I will display the credits and ask if I may have permission to use them on a signature tag then I upload it to my domain site and tell them they can see what I mean.... I usually type the lyrics I want out like this (example only-no actual lyrics here): "These are your wonderful lyrics, and I want to add them to my tag...." - song by Some Great Group/Singer.

I've had surprising success at asking in this manner and have only been told no once... and even he later rethought it as said yes but only on that tag for that one time.

Give it a shot... the worst that will happen is they say no and you can't use the lyrics.. which is where you sit now :)

That's my big help for the day LOL

Lyrics are as copyrighted as any image. If you don't have explicit (and I would say written) permission from the author or the copyright holder, then I would say it is not allowed to use.

of course they are copyrighted, but you're quoting someone.
It's like you would never be allowed to quote anyone in writing...

It's not like you're re recording and releasing their song as your own, we gotta get real here.

I have used song excerpts and will continue to do so.

And don't get me started on msn groups and some managers....lol
